Coronavirus (COVID-19) - How to Work Remotely Effectively

The knock-on effect of the WHO declaring COVID-19 as a pandemic is significant.

While many businesses are telling staff to work from home, the reality is everyone doesn’t do it well. For instance, research from Cardiff University report 39% or remote workers work longer hours to complete their work!!!

Mindset is important. Remote working is not something you do:

❌ In your pyjamas

❌ In bed

❌ At the kitchen table

Remote working is a massive opportunity to get more done, but sadly it will be a costly wasted opportunity in a lot of cases.

People who fail at remote working waste time by:

❌ Being distracted

❌ Procrastinating

❌ Not being accountable

❌ Wondering what happened to the day

It’s little wonder Buffer reported how 22% of remote workers find it hard to unplug after work!!!

Two critical elements to remote working are the individuals' personal productivity (are they effective) and the tools to communicate/collaborate. A lot of people get caught up in which tool is better. While there'll always be a shinier object, I believe the best tool is the one you currently have (especially in the current climate) and the focus should be on using them well.

🙋 How well do you measure up to these 13 points in the Effective Remote Working Checklist?

  1. Have a dedicated workspace that is comfortable & uncluttered

  2. Determine the tools required to communicate & collaborate with the team

  3. Ensure you have the necessary technology & security clearance to do your job

  4. Establish protocols for staying visible with your team & manager by communicating & collaborating honestly & frequently

  5. You’ll need to be good at eliminating distractions

  6. Get comfortable with working alone

  7. Leverage timeboxing to drive specific outcomes

  8. Understand your peak energy times (it might be different than it is in the office)

  9. Don’t fall victim to procrastination

  10. Be deliberate about the hours you work

  11. Ensure company protocols for data backup & storage are followed

  12. Each day measure what you achieved versus the plan versus expectations & determine what you’ll do differently

  13. Exercise & eat healthy (don’t let the fridge become your best friend…)
