How to increase focus and reduce work deadline stress before Xmas

“The biggest challenge is to stay focused. It's to have the discipline when there are so many competing things.” – Alexa Hirschfeld

What projects, outcomes, targets or deadlines do you need to achieve before Xmas? Chances are there’s more on your To-Do List than the time available. Are you on track or do you need refocus in the lead up to Xmas?

With 6 weeks until Xmas, the good news there’s still time to drive outcomes and get a lot done. The bad news is there are only 6 weeks and December is known as the most stressful month of the year for nearly half of the population!!!

It’s all about focus

If you’re not at the level you want, then understand where you need to prioritise efforts to be successful. What are your:

  • Must Do’s – the non-negotiables

  • Should Do’s – the important but not critical

  • Could Do’s – the things you would like to do if you had the time

Time is limited so be very deliberate with what gets your attention. Focus on the tasks that make the greatest impact – the Must Do’s. Complete the Must Do’s before commencing the Should Do’s and Could Do’s.

You might be thinking that’s fine in theory, but I don’t have enough time to complete the Must Do’s. If that’s the case, then look to claw back time from non-value added aspects that consume your time.

Where’s the low hanging fruit?

Ninety percent of business people tell me they’d get more done if there weren’t so many meetings and interruptions. Workers typically get back 1 hour a day (5 hours a week) when they proactively manage meetings and interruptions. Simple ways to do so include:

  • Meetings – only attend the most important or send a substitute in your place

  • Interruptions – turn off notifications and use a batch communication approach with chronic interrupters

We’re stressed when we’re overwhelmed. Focus on your Must Do’s to reduce overwhelm and increase the probability of success.
